FARM FACTS: Testing Your Electric Fence Energizer

April 18, 2022

Electric Fence Energizer Electric Fence Energizer

With cold days leaving & warm days ahead, farmers & livestock alike are thinking about pasture. It doesn’t matter the weather; you can do maintenance on your fence without going out to the field. Bring your electric fence energizer into Sunderland Co-op for a free check-up, to ensure it’s running to the best of its ability.

You may have a fence tester at home, but we have the ability to test your fencer under load. What exactly does that mean? We’re able to plug in your energizer as if it were connected to an ideal electric fence, with zero faults.  If your energizer is putting out the correct amount of power under load, it's ready to go for the season.

After first plugging your energizer in for the season, we recommend waiting at least three hours before turning out your livestock. This wait will allow for the power to flow through your entire fence. If you notice that your energizer isn’t running at its maximum power after it’s been tested, check the following.

Look for Debris:
Long grass, brush or fallen trees touching your fence, can suck the power out of your energizer by grounding it out. Ensure there’s nothing touching your fence.

Ground Rods:
An energizer is only as good as its grounding. Make sure you’re using the correct material and quantity of ground rods.

Maintenance:
Check to make sure all wire, posts and insulators are in good condition. Not only will this help keep your fence running at maximum power, but it will also keep your animals safe.

If your energizer isn’t working the way it should, we offer on-site repairs at our Peterborough location. We also carry Central-Ontario’s largest selection of Gallagher energizers, meaning if needed, we can help you select the ideal energizer for your property.  We also stock a variety of fence testers for every budget.

As always, we want you to get the best “shock” for your buck!
Not only will keep livestock in & predators out, but it will keep your neighbours happy too!
