FARM FACTS: Raising Your Own Backyard Poultry

March 11, 2022

Red Sex Link Chickens

Nothing beats farm fresh eggs on a quiet Sunday morning... Especially when they come from your own back yard!

‘Backyard’, or ‘homestead’ type poultry raising has become a very popular hobby over the past few years, and we love helping new to the crew farmers get started! From raising day old chicks, to caring for full grown egg or meat producing birds, we have all of the knowledge and products to help get you started and keep your operation running smoothly.

Proper housing & comfort, nutrition and bio-security knowledge are three of the most important keys to raising your own livestock, poultry very much included.
Listed below, you’ll find some products, and tips for using them, on your journey to raising and caring for your own backyard flock!

Fresh Bedding
Dry shavings, straw etc.
Fresh bedding is essential in keeping your birds dry and happy. Ridding your coop of pesky moisture, especially during the winter months, will result in a much happier, healthier flock!

Properly Nutrition
Tailored for all life stages, breeds and purposes.
Knowing exactly what to feed your flock is key to top notch production and will benefit not only your birds, but your wallet too!

Adequate Housing
The right amount of space and air flow play a huge part in the overall health of your flock. Details such as roosting bars, enough nesting boxes and food/water placement are very important. Make sure to do your research to make sure the amount of birds you plan to house will fit comfortably in their new home!

There is always something to learn when it comes to a new backyard homesteading hobby, and poultry raising is no exception. Be sure to utilize our incredibly knowledgeable staff here at the Sunderland Co-op's three locations - Sunderland, Oakwood & Peterborough. We have everything to get you started, even the ability to order the chickens! Keep an eye out for seminars and events, we love sharing our love for what we do!
