Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza Announcement

04/07/2022
Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza AnnouncementAs of April 6th, 2022 the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has confirmed the presence of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) in six different locations within Ontario, with an additional three locations awaiting test results. Click here for location information.

Currently none of the Sunderland Co-op locations fall within these quarantined zones, however there has been a confirmed case in Selwyn Township, near our Peterborough location. Click here for a map of the quarantined zone.

Sunderland Co-op is taking the below measures to ensure the safety of your flocks.

Effective immediately, our stores will not be accepting returns on any poultry products, including but not limited to feeders, waterers, bedding, nesting boxes, incubators, egg turners, egg cartons, egg baskets, poultry health products, enrichment toys and fencing. As always, we do not accept any returns on livestock feed products.

Peterborough Location Specific Protocols:

All customers will be required to use a disinfectant foot bath station when entering the store, as well as hand sanitizer. This is not mandatory, but highly recommended by CFIA. Customers who may be transporting feed or live birds from our Peterborough location into the Selwyn Township quarantined zone will receive a General Permit issued by CFIA. In addition we will be stapling Avian Influenza fact sheets to invoices of all poultry feed or products. We have also created an Avian Influenza information station at our counter.

Selwyn Township Delivery Protocols:
We ask that all customers within the quarantined zone who need to use our delivery service, notify us if they have poultry on their premises. Our drivers will be required to use PPE including disposable boots and gloves, as well as disinfect their tires & truck interiors before entering/leaving a property. Our drivers will not be entering any facility/building which houses poultry or poultry feed. In addition, our drivers will be keeping a large distance from any poultry.

Symptoms of Avian Influenza include:
  • decrease in feed & water consumption
  • extreme depression - lack of energy & movement
  • drop in egg production (many of which are soft-shelled or shell-less)
  • high & sudden morbidity & mortality rate
  • swelling around the head, neck & eyes
  • coughing, gasping for air or sneezing
  • diarrhea
  • signs of septicemia: hemorrhages on the hocks, severe edema of eyelids, wattles & comb

There is no treatment for the disease.

Farmers & small flock owners should take the following measures:

  • keep poultry away from areas frequented by wild birds
  • do not allow birds to "free-range" in any area where they may come in contact with wild birds or wild bird feces
  • maintain strict control over access to poultry houses - limit exposure of visitors
  • make sure equipment is cleaned & disinfected before taking into poultry houses
  • do not keep bird feeders or create duck pond close to poultry houses
  • maintain high sanitation standards - wash hands, disinfect clothing & footwear
  • regularly disinfect coops, feeders and waterers
  • keep new birds separate when entering the flock
